True – MSE is not perfect. See my recommendations below to avoid infections.

Updating MSE FAQ – http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/mseupdate/thread/74e507b8-f6da-4eca-8ce7-d1aca7d3f1ba

You should never have more than one security product installed on the PC providing active protection/scanning. This can cause performance issues, system instability, and can hinder the effectiveness of both products at providing protection.

Malwarebytes without the real time protection is okay, but it is not needed for protection. It is used *after* the fact, so where’s the protection?

Registry cleaning? http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=643
There is no valid reason for the average user to run a registry cleaner. And, if one is used, they should never be allowed to make changes unless *you* know what they are changing. They can cause lots of damage if used unwisely.

Make sure that the Windows Firewall is enabled.

Make sure that all important/critical updates, including service packs for the operating system and programs are installed from Microsoft Update (Windows Update).

Make sure Internet Explorer is at version 8 and updated with all patches.

In Internet Explorer 8, use the SmartScreen Filter.

Make sure that IE Internet Security settings are at least set to medium-high (default).

Enable the pop-up blocker in IE.

On Vista and Windows 7 make sure that User Account Control (UAC) ON and not running with elevated privileges.

Make sure that Windows Automatic Updates are set to at least notify, but the preferred setting is to download and install automatically. If you update manually, be sure to update as soon as possible after being notified of available updates.

Make sure that installed applications, especially Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash, and Java are at their latest versions. Many vendors are regularly updating and patching for security holes.

Never click through links from unknown sources and use caution even if they are from a “trusted” source.

Never open unsolicited email attachments.

Practice safe web browsing.

Home Computer Repair Services

Are you sick of taking apart your PC and bringing it to a repair shop every time it needs service-only to wait a long time to get it back? Our trusted home computer repair technicians will come directly to your home to solve your computer troubles right on-the-spot. Simply call us to select an appointment time to fit your schedule. We offer same day service in most area.

PC Upgrades

Is your computer a few years old? Is it slow booting up? Are you running out of hard drive space? We can breathe new life into your PC by upgrading some of its critical components. Even if your system is fairly new, you can still upgrade your pc to accommodate your growing collection of digital photos, movies, files, or video games. Have questions about whether or not you should upgrade? Call us today!

Computer Networking

If you have more than one PC in your home, have you considered networking them together? A home network allows your computers to share photos, documents, and videos, and even an internet connection. Even better, a wireless network is the cutting-edge way to connect all of the pc’s and laptops in your home. Wireless networks are perfect for people who want to connect laptop and desktop computers or for people who don’t like to be tied down. And when you go wireless, you won’t have the inconvenience of tripping over messy network cables.

Malware and Spyware Removal

Does it seem like your computer has a life of its own? It could be a virus or trojan. No matter what kind of computer you have, you always need the most up-to-date Anti-Virus software. Not only do Anti-Virus programs protect your computer from crashing, but they also prevent you from accidentally passing the infection to other computers of family and friends when you send e-mails or share files. If you’re unsure about which virus software to install or how to configure it, just give us a call!

Internet Security Protection and Firewalls

How secure is your computer? As Internet usage has grown, so has the number of security threats. One way to protect yourself is to install a firewall, which keeps intruders from sneaking into your computer and accessing your private data. Firewalls also can alert you when unauthorized programs such as viruses and spyware attempt to transmit your sensitive information over the Internet. In particular, firewalls are crucial if you have the always-on Internet connection of DSL or a cable modem. Protect yourself and your family … with help from I.T. on the Go Inc.

Data Transfer Backup and Recovery

How often do you backup your PC? If it were to crash or be stolen, would you lose important data? I.T. on the Go Inc recommends installing a rewritable DVD burner or an external hard drive. In addition to helping you to backup your data safely, we also offer data-recovery services that can try to recover lost files resulting from hardware malfunctions, software conflicts, or viruses.

Preventive PC Maintenance and Optimization

You wouldn’t drive a car for years without changing the oil, so why ignore your computer? Like any investment, your computer needs constant care, which means keeping it free of dust. When was the last time your PC had a thorough cleaning? If it has been more than six months, it is time to schedule a preventive-maintenance visit.

Expectations fully met and exceeded. The service is thoroughly knowledgeable and candidly discussed, leaving no questions. To have my needs and questions anticipated long before they occurred to me was a rare event. Such was my experience at I.T. on the Go. Heartily recommended. I’ll go back as soon as the need arises. Clone yourselves so everyone’s experience will be as excellent as mine. Many thanks; you’ve set a high standard.

As we become more dependent on technology, it is becoming increasingly important to find honest professionals to help keep you up and running. At I.T. on the Go we don’t just fix one problem, but we find the reasons for those problems and fix everything as a whole. There are no band-aids or temporary fixes with us. Our goal is to not see the same computer twice but to see different computers from our pleased clients.

FREE Front Counter Diagnotics! We go through a checklist to show you the problems we are seeing and let you know a service level you need.

After the checkin process a technician verifies the issues and double checks to make sure the correct service level has been quoted.

During the process you are kept informed on the status of your computer & when the work has been completed we will call you right away!

The diagnostics phase is the most important phase because without a proper diagnosis, your will continue to have problems. Most computers do not have 1 simple problem; it’s a cause and effect situation. The problems are caused by other underlying hardware, software and/or virus problems but the effects are endless and annoying.

If Apple succeeds, it could pose a significant threat to Google’s power to attract and generate traffic for multimedia content, undercutting its hugely profitable search ad business.

Today’s launch of the Apple iPad came with a big surprise to those of us following the sad story of the iPhone’s network issues: The new device will stick with AT&T as the cellular data provider. We can argue forever about whether or not AT&T set sail with the iPhone in a leaky boat, how it should have started bailing the boat at the first signs of trouble, or if it should have set the iPhone free to sail with better networks — but that’s not going to change anything. AT&T has faced a 5,000 percent increase in data traffic over the last three years, and its experience is a cautionary tale for carriers in the age of superphones and iPad-like devices. Here’s what we can learn from AT&T’s experience.

If you have heard about Linux you’ve probably heard that it is free, quicker than Windows, more secure than Windows, immune to viruses and very complicated. And details aside, those rumours are fairly accurate.

One problem with Linux is the question: “What do you mean by Linux?” - because you won’t be downloading “Linux”. You’ll be downloading one of the myriad of distributions: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mint, Kubuntu, Redhat and so on. They are all “linux” but with various changes to the GUI, packages included and have more fundamental differences too. This is very confusing for most people and understandably so.

Assuming you’ve settled on a distribution (and by the way I’d recommend Ubuntu 9.10 now it’s out) you might be wondering about which application programs you will be able to run on it. And the good news here is that there are 1000’s of great applications, most of them free, covering the majority of functions you are likely to want your computer for: Word processing, email, internet, music, video and so on. Many of these apps work really well and look great into the bargain. And much of this will be FREE. Imagine the potential cost savings – not paying for Vista and MS-Office could save large amounts of money then and there, and in the future when you don’t pay for upgrades and new versions.
So jump now right? Free computing is surely the way forward?

Well maybe. Whatever its proponents argue, even the friendliest linux distributions are not as simple to use, as well supported by the manufacturers or as easy to troubleshoot as Windows or Mac. If you are lucky and your system contains parts and peripherals that come with suitable drivers for your Ubuntu distibution and the installation goes OK then you will probably have a refreshingly positive computing experience “out of the box”. But if not, and you are not the sort of person prepared to get technical fast, you might well be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

Many Windows problems are solved with settings you can find hidden in the graphical interface, or with a patch you can run off the internet, or maybe by installing or reinstalling something. But with linux distros you are likely to be instructed by forum gurus to “edit fstab from console – as root obviously”. And if that doesn’t mean anything to you, you have a pretty steep learning curve to climb. Linux is beautifully logical and doesn’t try to hide its computer science roots from the world but one reason Microsoft and Apple do so well is that they know users want to use and not become computer experts. In fact, if you want a solid linux system with an elegant GUI and perfect compatibility with hardware and drivers etc then you can get one, it’s called Macintosh and it costs you.

I personally believe that linux troubleshooting is still too difficult for the average user and therefore not a great choice unless that user has support to hand from someone fairly tech-savvy. The cost argument also losts some weight when you consider that Windows is usually free with most new machines so you’re often not paying for it anyway, until it’s upgrade time at least. But if you are not scared of getting into the guts of an OS then jumping ship makes good sense. Once you have stopped paying an arm and a leg for your OS and common apps, it’s hard to go back. Older machines or wimpy netbooks struggling with bloated WIndows installations can whizz along nicely with a linux installation. And once you have your linux running nicely, it is more likely to stay that way than your XP or Vista setup.

Along with the huge growth in popularity of USB flash drives has come an equally large choice of devices to buy and places to buy them from. The number of brands, sizes and shops is quite bewildering.

So it is quite natural to start thinking of USB Sticks as “commodity items” – that they are all essentially the same. After-all, aren’t all the memory chips really made by just 3 firms anyway? So why not just get the most gigabytes for your money or buy one on looks alone?

The fact of the matter is, all memory sticks are not created equal.

What differences are there?

The memory chips themselves

There are a number of memory chip manufacturers producing a range of chips of differing quality. Making computer chips is not a simple business. It is not possible to produce chips of perfect performance and reliability all the time. What actually happens is that the chip companies create the chips and then test them. Many are disposed of at this point and the ones that get through are quality graded. So even if there was only one chip maker, there would still be chips of varying quality.

The stick’s own systems and controller chip

A flash thumb-drive is not just some memory put in a case. There is a processor doing some fairly complex work in the background. The way the chips is written to and read from will depend on the algorithms designed by the stick manufacturer. And these are not all the same. Some are significantly more reliable and noticeable faster. Makers like SanDisk have been perfecting their methods for years and so their sticks will last much longer and with higher performance that won’t degrade quickly compared to some new kid on the block.

These devices also employ something call wear-levelling which tries to overcome the fact that flash memory wears out as it is repeatedly written and erased. This spreads the data out over the whole drive rather than just filling up the same area each time. Badly designed wear-levelling will kill a chip often years faster. Incidentally, this is one reason why deleting data from a memory stick does not really destroy it, even when using some secure erase tools.

The physical parts

Often the first thing that kills a flash stick isn’t even chip failure but the plug losing contacts with the circuit board. Cheap and nasty devices are not designed well and made of cheap parts which break. Data recovery experts CAN get your data back from this situation but only if you are prepared to pay an amount many times the cost of the drive.

How to buy your next memory stick

It is impossible to list all the good memory sticks out there but some simple guidelines will help a lot.

1. Don’t buy the cheapest stick with the most memory
2. Buy a recognised brand – this does not need to be a huge mega-brand like Sony but at least find a firm who has been making memory sticks for a number of years. Personally I like Sandisk - they are not expensive but have amongst the best technology and I have had drives that have lasted years.
3. Separate looks from function. You can pay a lot for a very cool looking drive. But this element of cost does not decide whether the stick is a good one or not. Feel free to spend megabucks an the latest and greatest but first make sure the quality underneath is there.
4. Buy from a retailer you have heard of with a good reputation. Trying to buy a non-counterfeit device from an auction site can be harder than you might think. The amount you might save compared to the risk you are buying a faked stick is not worth it IMO.

OK the title of this post is actually misleading but for good reason. I’m not just going to talk about viruses but in fact about a range of nasties that can infect your computer. But most of us tend to call them viruses even though many of them are quite different.

A computer Virus is a self-replicating program that can travel from computer to computer. It is the self-replicating bit that makes it a virus.

There are other sorts of “malware” (malicious software) that don’t replicate themselves, don’t spread from computer to computer, but cause a lot of heartache all the same. These include but are not limited to: Trojans, Spyware and Rogueware.

A Trojan is a trojan-horse program. As the name suggests, it is a malicious program hiding inside another program. You might download a useful application and it runs fine, but hidden from you, you have now given permission for a second program to wreak havoc inside your system

Spyware is a program designed to spy on you, often sending information back to the software author. This might just be advertising type information. Or it might include your credit card details.

Rogueware usually takes the form of fake anti-virus software, but instead of helping you, the program removes functions from your computer to push you into buying their useless software or stealing your financial details. Malware can be one or all of these simultaneously. The common element is that they got onto your PC without you wanting it to happen.

So how do we prevent ourselves becoming the infected?

Well the absolute truth is that there is no 100% certain method other than pulling the network cable out of the computer. If you are online, you can get infected. No single security software package can guarantee protection. However you can severely reduce the chances by selecting good protection and browsing habits. Let’s take a look at some of the things we can do to protect ourselves:

AntiVirus programs: Most of us use AV apps but we still get infected. How is this possibe? AVs operate mostly by recognising the signatures of viruses. They cannot detect viruses which they don’t know about and many won’t detect viruses that hide themselves using various methods. Many will not detect non-viruses such as the ones already mentioned.

Antimalware specific apps: tools like Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor have paid-for versions that scan the system as it is being used and attempt to stop malware getting into the sytem. They are to malware what AV apps are to viruses.

Firewalls: A firewalls is a piece of software or hardware that sits between you and the net and blocks certain types of “traffic” getting to your computer and possible getting from your computer to the net (depending on what you use). The good news is that if you have a broadband router then you have a hardware firewall that does a great job at stopping a lot of attacks getting past. Some computer Words scan the net for unprotected targets to infect and a firewall prevents that. Furthermore, Windows comes with a firewall built in which does the same thing. However the Windows firewall can get turned off by some malware and neither prevent outgoing traffic. This is by design as it allows useful applications like Itunes or Internet Explorer to connect to the web. However it also means if you get infected by some Spyware, the program can send your information back to base.

It is possible to upgrade your firewall to one that requires the user to give permission for applications to access the net. Online Armor or Zone Alarm are examples. The downside is that you get asked questions like “Internet Explorer is trying to access the internet. Would you like to give it permission?”. This can cause problems with inexperienced users and children who end up just saying yes to everything. However if you set them up correctly and learn how they work, they offer a another layer of protection that is useful.

HIPS: HIPS stands for Host Intrustion Protection System. Essentially it monitors your system’s files and settings and does not allow programs to make changes without your permission. Vista and Windows 7′s UAC could be said to be a form of HIPS. Some AV apps have HIPS, some firewalls have HIPS and there are specific HIPS applications. Again you get the annoying questions e.g. “XYZ application is trying to make a change to the registry, would you like to allow this?”.

Sandboxing: Sandboxing creates a safe area on the computer in which it runs applications. No changes can escape the sandbox and when you turn it off the sandbox is obliterated. Thus using a sandboxed browser you could get heavily infected and this not affect the rest of the sytem at all. An example of such an app is SandboxIE. They can be tricky to understand for many users and there are irritations with trying to save things you have downloaded from the web since they are downloaded into the sandbox and need moving out of it to be available to the system as a whole. However the protection they offer is very strong indeed.

Rights management: When log on as admin in XP, you give admin rights to applications you are using, including malware. Simply creating a Standard account and using that to browse confers some protection. You can be more sophisticated than this and use apps that drop the rights of certain programs instead. DropMyRights is one example.

Behavioural based protection: This protection operates on looking at what the malware is trying to do and how it might go about doing it, and noticing that sort of behaviour. ThreatFire is an example of this sort of application.

As you might expect, the market is full of applications and many combine many of these types of protection. They often make lots of claims and use (even more) confusing terminology. It can be hard to pick the right apps. In my line of work I see many infected computers and know that some of the biggest names in the AV business produce less than effective products. As a MobileTechie customer I will be happy to give you advice on such matters.

Your browsing behaviour.

This is arguably the most important security tool at your disposal. Nothing can protect against a wreckless user. Here are some basic tips:

Do not install software when you are not 100% sure of it’s source and it’s validity. Plenty of software sites give out infected software.

Do not immediately believe security alerts that pop up claiming to be from Microsoft. Learn what your real security app pop-ups look like. Remember that Microsoft Security Centre as in XP etc does not come up with a large pop up saying you have been infected. It merely tells you when your firewall, updates and AV are not working properly. If in doubt. Reboot and see if it is still happening. At the time of writing, these fake AV infections are very prevalent.

Use limited accounts for web-browsing. This is doubly true for children.

Do not use P2P file-sharing applications like Kazaa and emule etc.

Do not click on “you’ve won an ipod” or other pop-ups.

If you have HIPS protection think carefully about what you are saying yes or no to. If in doubt, look it up or call someone who knows.

Keep up to date with the latest Windows updates and service packs.

Many of us start the New Year feeling slow and bloated and determined to slim down and get fit. You can offer the same hope to your computer and unlike us humans, it might even work!
As a computer gets older, relative to the new software you are likely to be using, you tend to notice it becoming slower and slower. Luckily there are a few easy ways to speed it up and get some extra use out of an aging system. I will start with the easy stuff that has the most effect:

1. Consider getting extra memory – as a rule of thumb there are 3 main bottlenecks in terms of computing performance that you are likely to experience: the CPU, disk and memory. If you have an older system, chances are it only came with about 512MB of RAM and so topping that up to 1 or 2 GBs will make a noticeable difference, especially when using more than one application at a time. This is not usually very expensive and IMO usually gives the best bang-for-buck performance increase. You need to make sure you have the correct RAM in terms of socket and speed etc. If you’re in any doubt then call MobileTechie who will fit RAM for you at a very reasonable price.

2. Check your disk space – if you are close to running out of disk space you will get speed issues and so clearing out old files will, in this case, make a big difference.

3. Defragment the drive – if you’ve not done this for a while, you will get a useful performance increase.

4. Set your page file to 1.5x the size of your physical RAM. Don’t use the variable or system managed size. Set the max and min to the same figure. It is best to set it to zero first, degrament the drive and then reset it as described. That way to ensure the pagefile is not itself fragmented. See point 2. here since you need adequte space for the pagefile to operate correctly.

5. Uninstall unneeded applications. This will free up space and remove any processes that run unnoticed in the background.

6. Prevent unnecessary applications from starting up. Using one of the many free startup tools you can stop apps like Adobe Speedlauncher and many others from starting up with Windows. This will improve your boot time as well as available memory and CPU.

There are other, more advanced tune-up options available but the above are simple, effective ones with a good chance of making a difference. I would advise against automated tune-up tools, especially ones involving “registry cleaning” which can render the system unbootable and have only a very small performance improvement anyway.

I.T. on the Go offers a full, in-depth diagnostic and tune-up service which can be done on-site at your home or business. If you are in the Central Arkansas Area area then call now for a no-obligation quote on 501-588-2942.
